Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
At Roost, we take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our household management platform. Please read this policy carefully to understand our practices regarding your personal data.
Information We Collect
We collect information to provide and improve our service. The types of data we may collect include:
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and password (stored as a secure hash, never in plain text).
- Profile Information: Your display name, avatar, and preferences within the app.
- Household Data: Information you and your household members add, such as expense records, chore assignments, grocery lists, maintenance schedules, and activity history.
- Kids Mode Data: If you enable Kids Mode, we collect your child's first name, a self-selected avatar (emoji), and a 4 to 6 digit PIN used for login. We also store chore completion records and earned star balances for each child account.
- Subscription Information: Your plan tier, billing cycle, and subscription status. Payment card details are handled entirely by Stripe and are never stored on our servers.
- Usage Data: How you interact with Roost, including features used and actions taken within the app.
- Technical Data: Browser type, operating system, device type, and IP address for security and troubleshooting purposes.
How We Use Your Information
We use the data we collect to:
- Provide the Service: Operate and maintain your Roost account, households, and all associated features including expenses, chores, groceries, maintenance tracking, and kids mode.
- Process Subscriptions: Manage your paid plan through Stripe, including free trials, upgrades, downgrades, and cancellations.
- Communicate With You: Send important account updates, security alerts, subscription confirmations, and (with your permission) product announcements.
- Improve the App: Understand how users interact with Roost so we can fix bugs and develop new features.
- Ensure Security: Detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, and violations of our terms.
Children's Privacy and Kids Mode
Roost includes an optional Kids Mode feature designed for children in a household setting. Kids Mode allows a parent or household admin to create a restricted account for a child. Here is how we handle children's data:
- Limited Data Collection: Child accounts store only a first name, an emoji avatar, a login PIN, chore assignments, and earned star balances. We do not collect email addresses, phone numbers, location data, or contact information for children.
- No Public Exposure: A child's data is visible only to members of their own household. Child data is never shared publicly, sold, or used for advertising.
- No Tracking or Profiling: We do not track children across apps or websites, build profiles of children, or use children's data for behavioral advertising.
- Parental Control: Only a parent or household admin can create, modify, or delete a child account. Parents can review all data associated with their child's account at any time.
- No Direct Contact: We will never contact a child directly. All communications go to the parent or household admin.
- Account Deletion: Parents can delete a child's account at any time, which immediately removes the child's name, PIN, and personal data from our system.
Roost is designed for household use and is not a general-purpose service directed at children. Kids Mode is a managed feature that requires an adult account to set up and administer. If you believe a child's data has been collected without parental consent, please contact us at privacy@roost.app and we will delete it promptly.
Information Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties. We may share your information only in the following circumstances:
- Service Providers: We use trusted third-party services to operate Roost. These include Stripe (payment processing), database hosting, email delivery, and error monitoring. These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for the purposes we specify.
- Within Your Household: Data you add to a household (expenses, chores, groceries, etc.) is visible to other members of that household. This is core to how Roost works and is controlled by the household admin.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, such as in response to a valid subpoena, court order, or government request.
- Safety and Security: We may disclose information to protect the rights, property, or safety of Roost, our users, or others.
- Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred. We will notify you via email before any such change.
Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your personal information:
- Encryption in Transit: All data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted using TLS (HTTPS).
- Secure Password Storage: Passwords are hashed using bcrypt and are never stored or transmitted in plain text.
- Access Controls: Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel on a strict need-to-know basis.
- Secure Infrastructure: We host our infrastructure on secure cloud platforms with robust physical and network security.
While we strive to protect your data, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. We encourage you to use strong passwords and protect your account credentials.
Data Retention and Deletion
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. Here is what happens to your data in different scenarios:
- Active Accounts: Your data is retained while your account is active and for as long as needed to provide the service.
- Account Deletion: You can delete your account at any time from the app's settings. Upon deletion, your personal profile information is removed immediately, and associated household data is deleted or anonymized within 30 days.
- Child Account Deletion: A parent or admin can delete a child's account at any time, which immediately removes the child's personal data from our system.
- Household Deletion: When a household is deleted, all associated data (expenses, chores, groceries, activity history, etc.) is permanently removed.
- Canceled Subscriptions: If you cancel a paid subscription, your data is retained but some features become read-only until you resubscribe. You can still export or delete your data after cancellation.
- Legal Retention: We may retain certain information as required by law or for legitimate business purposes, such as resolving disputes or preventing fraud.
Your Privacy Rights
You have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: You can update or correct your personal information at any time through your account settings.
- Deletion: You can request deletion of your personal data by deleting your account or contacting us at privacy@roost.app.

We use cookies and local storage to enhance your experience on Roost:
- Session Cookies: Keep you signed in during your visit.
- Local Storage: Store your theme preference (light/dark mode) and authentication token on your device for faster app loading.

Third-Party Services
Roost integrates with the following third-party services:
- Stripe: Processes subscription payments for Roost Plus and Roost Family plans. Stripe collects and handles payment card information directly through their secure checkout. We never see or store your full card number. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.
- Database Hosting: Our database is hosted on a secure cloud platform that provides encryption at rest and network-level security.
- Email Delivery: We use a third-party email service to send transactional emails (account confirmations, password resets, subscription receipts) and optional product announcements.
- Analytics: We use privacy-friendly analytics on our marketing website to understand traffic patterns. The mobile app itself does not include third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
We do not use any third-party advertising networks in the Roost app.
Data Storage Location
Your data is stored on secure servers. Data for all household members, including child accounts in Kids Mode, is stored together within your household's data record. This data is accessible only to members of your household and authorized Roost administrators for support purposes.
